FALL AND WINTER CONCERTS

As the weather starts to turn and the air begins to chill, why not keep warm with the sweaty masses at a concert? Here is part one of our list of must see concerts for this fall and winter.

Colbie Caillat (Seattle: 10/7)

PLAYING WITH FEELING

It’s very common that I’ve heard people tell me “you can’t just play the music on the page, you have to feel it.” At the surface level, it sounds a bit silly or like a lesson from a cheesy 1990s movie where a child learns about “the heart of music.” But when you play music, you know exactly what these people are saying.

Playing the sheet music exactly how it reads may produce an accurate presentation of the music, but it might feel emotionless.  So much of music is affected by the personality of the musician.

FALL PLAYLIST (PART 2)

Continuing the list from the last blog [link], here are few more songs in our library that I think fit the upcoming season so perfectly.

Frederic Chopin - Nocturne In Eb Major, Op. 9, No. 2

RHINESTONE COWBOY'S LAST RIDE

As I was driving the other day listening to the radio, a song came up on the radio that I was unfamiliar with. It sounded like a familiar ballad, but I was sure that I’d never heard it. It was very simple with lots of strings.

It wasn’t something I would normally like, but it somehow grabbed me. The singer sang with ease and age. The track ended and the DJ came on to say it was a new song from Glen Campbell called “Ghost on the Canvas.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF A VENUE

It wasn’t until recently that I began to realize how important the venue is for me when considering what concerts I’m going to spend my money on. When I first started going to shows in my early teens, it was a simple choice: a band I like is playing nearby and if I can afford it, I’ll go. Now that I live in Seattle and shows are happening everyday and I’ve been able to see some of my favorite acts, I’ve become a bit more selective.

REMEMBERING NICK ASHFORD

Nick Ashford, half of the songwriting duo Ashford & Simpson, died yesterday at 70 years old due to complications with throat cancer.

Though Ashford is gone, he has left a beautiful legacy behind with some of the greatest Motown hits ever recorded. Ashford & Simpson, while performers themselves, typically worked in the background while orchestrating some of the biggest hits for R&B/Soul’s superstars. To name a few:

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell – “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”

THE COOL FACTOR OF THE MAN IN BLACK

Johnny Cash is arguably the coolest person to have ever graced the music industry.
He really is the whole package.  He had the bad boy image, the redemptive story, and relevancy to all genres. The last one is really the most amazing part. It’s easy to say that mainstream pop artists like Michael Jackson and revered across genres because their music is designed to be accessible to a wide audience. But Cash was a country singer who got his start in the 1950s.

RANDOM MUSIC CONNECTIONS

I love working with music!  You just never know what connections you are going to run into.

Case in point, I was sitting in a coffee shop in Boulder CO yesterday and the guy at the table next to me had an inordinate amount of technology on his table.  Now coming from me, with my Macbook Air, my iPad 2 and my Android phone, it takes a bit to have an inordinate amount of tech, but Dotan Negrin qualified.  He had a complete portable video editing suite sitting on the coffee shop table so I asked him what he was up to.

REFLECTING ON THE EAGLES

When I was 13 years old, my taste in music was still developing. I was caught in a whirl wind of the digital age of music and corporate radio playing the latest pop-punk hits. I was only beginning to actually have an interest in it outside of my favorite theme songs. That’s why I still feel surprised, and honored that my first concert was The Eagles.

BRYAN JOHN APPLEBY

Seattle is filled with countless singer-songwriter’s trying to make their name. It’s a messy situation and can be very hard to follow. So when you hear one specific name over and over again, there is undoubtedly something special happening there.
