An Atypical Approach to Start-up Investing from iSheetMusic's Matthew Sutton
The words "risk" and "startup" are often linked, but when it comes to emerging mobile app iSheetMusic, co-founder Matthew Sutton finds that some risks are worth taking. With the vast majority of tech startups failing in the first year, it is indeed a risk to invest time and money in an untested venture, let alone to convince family and friends to do so.
But as Sutton explains, this is more of a question of philosophy than of the business idea. "If someone I speak to doesn't feel like they want to invest, it is not a statement about me, my abilities or my business. It is a statement about their approach to risk taking. Convincing someone who is risk averse that they should invest in your venture will simply not turn out well."
With iSheetMusic, Sutton aims not only to get his business off the ground, but also to give friends and family a great opportunity – an idea that remains crucial for many startups.
"They invested because they want to see you succeed but also because they want to be part of something interesting and fun," he reminds new entrepreneurs. "Let them know when challenges happen as well as successes. Letting them see a bit of what you are dealing with not only helps them understand your business but also appreciate all you are doing to keep their investment safe."
